Property description
An impressive four-storey, fully furnished townhouse forming part of the prestigious Old Fire Station development, situated within York's historic city walls on a quiet residential road opposite Clifford's Tower. Furnished and presented to a luxurious standard throughout, the property combines the character and architectural heritage of this remarkable historic building with contemporary design, generous accommodation and a refined level of finish. With four generously proportioned double bedrooms, each furnished with a double bed, private terraces, secure allocated undercover parking and views towards Clifford's Tower and the River Ouse, this is an exceptional furnished home for those seeking a particularly high standard of city living.
Originally built in 1856 as Trinity Methodist Chapel and Sunday School, the building is distinguished by its striking polychromatic brick exterior and fascinating history. Following the Chapel's closure in 1935, it served as York Fire Station from 1938 until 2011. In 2017, the historic building underwent a sympathetic redevelopment to create fourteen apartments and townhouses and two commercial units, with the scheme receiving a Silver award at the 2020 What House? Awards.
The property opens into a substantial reception hall, providing a powerful first impression and offering two large cloak cupboards, a utility room and cloakroom with WC. From here, the accommodation flows into the superb open-plan kitchen, dining and living space. The bespoke kitchen is fitted with extensive storage, white granite worktops, a central island, range cooker, integrated appliances and Quooker hot water tap. The room is furnished and arranged to create an elegant yet comfortable space for both everyday living and entertaining, while bi-fold doors open directly onto the lower terrace. Steps lead up to the generous upper terrace and seating area, creating an unusually substantial amount of private outdoor space for a central York property. A separate study, which could also be used as an additional bedroom if required, completes this floor.
The first floor provides a substantial living room with triple windows, creating a bright and spacious principal reception area, together with a beautifully furnished double bedroom featuring a double bed and its own en-suite shower room.
The second floor is home to the impressive principal bedroom suite, furnished to the same luxurious standard and featuring a double bed, en-suite shower room with walk-in shower and his-and-hers wash hand basins. Triple doors open onto a private terrace with views towards Clifford's Tower and across to the River Ouse. A further generously proportioned double bedroom, again furnished with a double bed, benefits from its own en-suite bathroom.
The third floor provides a fourth double bedroom with double bed and a further en-suite bathroom, complete with large bath, WC and wash hand basin, together with a useful store room. The flexible arrangement provides excellent accommodation for family living, guests or those requiring space to work from home.
Outside, the property benefits from well-maintained tiered terraces accessed from the kitchen and secure rear gated entrance. The upper terrace provides a generous private outdoor area, while the secure allocated undercover parking space has power sockets. A communal bike store is also provided.
The location places the property within easy reach of York's historic attractions, independent shops, cafés, restaurants, bars and cultural venues, with York Minster, the Shambles, York Theatre Royal and York Art Gallery all readily accessible. York railway station is just over half a mile away, providing regular services to London, Manchester, Edinburgh and other major cities, while the A64 is approximately three miles away, providing access towards Leeds, the M1 and the east coast.
The Old School House offers a rare combination of historic setting, luxurious furnishings, substantial accommodation and highly convenient central York living. The four double bedrooms are all furnished with double beds, while the beautifully presented interiors, private terraces, secure parking and views towards some of York's best-known landmarks create an exceptionally comfortable and polished home. It would particularly suit those looking for a furnished property that offers the standards, presentation and ease of a premium short stay experience, while providing the space, life style and facilities of a substantial private townhouse.
